As Seen On

The SKAGEN difference
It sounds like a small detail. It isn't. A seam facing outward catches coat, creates friction, and mats fur with every step. The SKAGEN's inverted seam faces inward — toward the rope core, away from your dog. That single decision changes how it feels to wear.
Engineering
A cross-section reveals what makes it different
Certified Italian Nappa leather from century-old European tanneries. Leather Working Group Gold certified — leather source, treatment, and environmental handling independently verified.
The rope interior gives structural strength without weight. It shapes naturally to your dog's neck — round, not flat — distributing contact evenly with no pressure ridge.
Standard rolled collars leave the seam on the outside. SKAGEN's seam is stitched and folded inward. No exposed edge. No friction ridge. No coat matting at the collar line.
Every competitor uses a barrel buckle that requires threading. The SKAGEN is the first rolled leather collar built with a side-release buckle — one click on, one click off.
Most owners who choose the SKAGEN have been through a cheaper collar or two first. They've watched the leather crack within a season, felt the outward seam mat their dog's coat, and given up on collars that never lasted the year. This is the one that finally does.
Sourced from one of Europe's most respected tanneries, extra-soft and independently certified for safety and environmental handling. Not the same as the "genuine leather" on budget collars that cracks in six months.
Hand-stitched by European artisans using traditional techniques. The inverted seam is achieved by hand — it can't be done by machine. That's what takes time. That's what the price reflects.
Properly maintained with occasional leather conditioning, this collar lasts years. That works out to less than $12 per year — less than a single grooming visit for a matted neck.
Standard collar + long-haired breed = mat removal at the groomer. That's $50–$120 per visit. If the SKAGEN prevents two mat-removal sessions, it has already paid for itself.
A collar lives outdoors — sun, rain, tugging, the occasional wash. Fabric and PVC give out within a year or two, and cheap "genuine" leather can fade and bleed its dye onto a light coat. Italian nappa leather does the opposite: it holds its color and softens into a patina that looks better with age.
| SKAGENItalian Nappa Leather | Fabric / Nylon | Plastic / PVC | Cheap "Genuine" Leather | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Color after 1–2 years | Holds color, deepens into a patina | Fades in sun and washing | Dulls, yellows, and cracks | Fades — dye can bleed onto light fur |
| Coat matting at the seam | Inverted seam — no ridge to catch coat | Woven edge abrades the coat | Hard edge catches and pulls | Exposed seam mats the coat |
| Feel against the neck | Soft, rounds to the neck | Stiff webbing | Rigid and sweaty | Stiffens as it dries out |
| Water & odor | Wipes clean, re-conditions | Holds odor when wet | Traps moisture underneath | Absorbs water, can crack |
| Hardware | Solid brass, nickel-free | Coated steel clip | Plastic buckle | Mixed metal, often nickel |
| Typical lifespan | 5–8 years | About 1 year | 1–2 years | 6–18 months |
Copenhagen, since 2003
HUND Denmark was founded in Copenhagen in 2003 by Anita, and it remains a small, family-run company by choice. The brand is built on hygge — the Danish philosophy of comfort and simple joy — applied to the one thing your dog wears every day: own fewer things, and make the few you keep worth keeping.
That principle shapes every SKAGEN. The extra-soft Italian nappa leather comes from one of Europe's most respected tanneries — responsibly produced, naturally breathable, and finished by hand by skilled leather artisans, with careful stitching and solid brass hardware chosen to age alongside it. Since arriving in the U.S. in 2017, HUND has also given back to shelter dogs: every purchase supports Operation Kindness, a no-kill shelter in Dallas, Texas.
"Designed for dogs. Chosen by people who care."
Long-haired breeds develop friction-related matting at the collar line. The SKAGEN's round shape and inward-facing seam let the coat glide freely — no ridge, no catch, no tangle.

Elegance worth every penny
"We ordered a harness and collar for our poodle, Henry, because his nylon harness and collar matted his thick curly hair. I wanted something that would work for him and would last. SO well made, SO easy for him to wear and quite elegant. Could not be happier."
Not enough stars in the sky
"Not enough stars to give this collar and leash praise. Extremely luxurious feeling. It actually makes me feel like a better person to have my puppy on the other end of it."
